Monique and the Mango Rains is the memoir of Kris Holloway's Peace Corps experience and the friendship she formed with Monique, a midwife in the small village where Holloway served.
The book was well written and fascinating, with tidbits of knowledge about the area and Holloway's work. However, the real focus of the memoir is the deep friendship between Monique and Holloway, a friendship that transcends differences and changes the lives of both women. There were many heart-rending moments as poverty and illness were rampant in the village, as well as the lower social status of women. This short read both expanded my horizons and touched my heart.
If you are interested in global health, diverse cultures, or simply a touching story of friendship,
Monique and the Mango Rains is both a quick and enriching read that I highly recommend.
