Top Ten Books I Would Want With Me On a Desert Island

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

This week's question is which ten books would I want with me on a desert island? To me, this says that the book has to be re-readable, because I go through about ten books a month, and who knows how many months I would be on a desert island if I were to be stranded?

1. Scriptures -- Gotta have those if I'm only going to have ten books.

2. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo -- I feel like this book is one that can teach more every time it is read.

3. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott -- I love this book and have read it over and over and over again. I would definitely be missing it if I was stranded without books.

4. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell -- This book is so complex and bizarre, and I think it could be reread several times.

5. An omnibus of the Anne of Green Gables books by L.M. Montgomery -- Cheating? Probably. I used to reread all eight of these books every summer. Every piece of my life has had a book that corresponds to it, and I would definitely want these with me.

6. An omnibus of the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling -- What? It doesn't exist? We'll just pretend it's the fattest book in the world. The Harry Potter books are so great for escaping reality, something that would definitely be needed on a desert island!

7. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke -- I haven't read this one yet, but it is the next chunkster I am planning to read, and it would be nice to have at least one book I'd never read before out on that desert island, especially one that promises to last a long time.

8. Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor -- I haven't read this one yet either, but it is one of my most anticipated releases this year, and I think it would definitely be a good escapism book -- the only problem is that it would be over too soon.

9. The Encyclopedia Britannica -- No one ever said it had to be in one volume, right? While it would definitely be dry reading, it would give me the opportunity to learn things -- and, potentially, might even have some life-saving advice.

10. My Kindle -- Before you say that this is the worst kind of cheating, bear in mind that it is battery-operated and there wouldn't be any plugs on the island. So... it wouldn't last forever. But it would give me some extra books to barrel through for the first couple of weeks.

    1. It is taking me some time to get through, but I guess that would be great on a desert island. :)

    1. Thank you for following! When I was a kid I always wanted to read the encyclopedia straight through, but never got to it -- I think with extra time (especially away from the internet) it would maybe actually happen.

    1. Haha thanks. E-readers definitely make these "if you could only take..." types of questions much easier.
