Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

First of all, writing the words "Fall" on the top of my subject line fills my heart with gladness. It has been a crazy few days moving into my new apartment in Los Angeles and I haven't really started to think about or decorate for my favorite season. Also, I love these quarterly Top Ten Tuesdays hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that give an opportunity to think about what to read next. Even though I only rarely follow my plan, I like to pretend I know what I want to do. I read 4 of 10 on my summer TBR (although I am halfway through one of them). We'll see how I do with this one. By the end of fall I will have a baby so who knows what will happen to my reading after that!

1. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins -- I can't wait to read this one for Halloween.
2. Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh -- I have been waiting for this book for almost a whole year (and I know there are some out there that have been waiting longer because they discovered it earlier!). I cannot wait to read it, right in time for the Halloween season.
3. Some Sherlock Holmes books -- I said this one for the summer. But I mean it this time.
4. Dracula by Bram Stoker -- I read The Historian last fall and loved the creepiness of Vlad the Impaler. While they discussed the historical inaccuracy of Dracula, reading so much about it made me excited to read the actual book.
5. East of Eden by John Steinbeck -- I know that this one was on my summer TBR too... but I have to read it soon, because my son's name is inspired from this book.
6. Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor -- Daughter of Smoke and Bone rocked my world last fall, and I am so excited for the sequel. It may or may not be the book I bring to the hospital. :)
7. Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas -- I'm probably going to read this one this week, and I am thrilled. I loved the novellas and am excited to get to a longer, meatier story about Celaena.
8. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke -- I don't know if I'll actually have time for this one, but I really would like to read it for R.I.P. VII as well.
9. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult -- Now that I'm in a little break from nursing, I think I could handle reading this one. I have been wanting to read it for a while but I didn't think I could handle it while I was actually working on a kid's cancer floor.
10. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson -- Something about hiking screams fall to me. Maybe because I spent the last six years in Utah, where the mountain leaves in the fall are unbelievably gorgeous.

What are you excited to read this fall?

  1. A Walk in the Woods sounds like a great fall read! And I really want to read The Woman in White too, but I think I'm going to save it since I just finished another Wilkie Collins books.

    1. I have to keep reminding myself that I need to save some good Halloween reads for future Octobers... there are so many books that I keep seeing on everyone's lists that I want to read all of them.

  2. I want to read Dracula for Halloween too. I started The Woman in White but didn't finish it so maybe I'll re-start it. And I've been meaning to read Sherlock Holmes for ages too. Here's hoping we both finally get to it! :)

    1. Wow, it sounds like we have really similar choices for our books. Here's hoping we both get to them all!

  3. Ahhh! I almost put Enshadowed on my list, but since I am currently reading it I decided not to. I hope you love it when you get to it.

You are in for a huge treat with The Woman In White. It's very well written and fun and perfect for fall.

    1. I'm excited to read your review of Enshadowed! I've yet to get my hands on it but I am hoping to get my library card soon (I just moved) and then I"m going to have to take a few days out of commission to read it. I've heard nothing but love for the Woman in White so I am really looking forward to it!

    1. I know the movie was a tough one for me to watch so I'm sure the book will be tough too -- but I feel like I just have to read it at some point because I work with kids who have cancer.

  5. I love East of Eden. I've been wanting to reread Wilkie Collins, because I don't remember my first reading of Woman in White. However, I want to get a pretty Penguin hardback edition first.

  6. I just finished Bryson's The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid. Great book, as was A Walk in the Woods. Interestingly enough he reveals in the book that one of the friends he talks about turns out to be the guy with him in A Walk in the Woods. Makes me want to read that again.

I too keep meaning to pick up and finish (or actually start over) Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. Not sure why I never finished it when it first came out as I was loving it and I adore her short story collection, The Ladies of Grace Adieu. I've read it over several times now.

    1. There are so many great Bill Bryson books that I keep hearing about. I really need to get started on his books instead of just adding more and more titles to my TBR on Goodreads.

I haven't read anything by Susanna Clarke but it is good to know that she has another good book out.

    1. I know -- it was one of those classics I read a fake version of when I was little and then never got around to the real thing. I'm excited to get started soon, though!
