Recommend A... book with a green cover

Monday, May 28, 2012

Recommend A... is a new meme hosted by Chick Loves Lit in which you recommend a book based on the prompt stated for that week. I love this idea because I love hearing about new books and sharing books I love, so I am planning on participating in this event regularly.

This week's theme is to recommend a book with a green cover. As I peeked at my bookshelves, one immediately hopped out at me.

Love, Stargirl is the sequel to Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. In the first book, the quirky, unusual Stargirl steals Leo's heart, but the people around her cannot accept her individuality and everyone turns against her. Following the book, Stargirl's family moves to Pennsylvania. Missing Leo, Stargirl begins writing him a series of letters to him (letters that are really more like a diary).

I loved this middle grade story. I remember when I bought it -- my husband (then my boyfriend) took me to a Borders (moment of sad silence...) to pick out a book for our date night, and this is what I chose. Everything that night was infused with an air of romance because although we weren't officially engaged yet, we had recently decided we wanted to get married. I was the happiest person alive, picking out books with my favorite person. When I got home, I opened this book and did not stop reading until it was finished. It wrung my heart with Stargirl's sadness but it also buoyed me up with its message of hope and patience.

Have I convinced you yet? Go buy Love, Stargirl as soon as possible.

    1. They are really cute! I've heard some people didn't like them because they thought Stargirl was too odd, but I think they are really missing out. And thanks, it was. :)

    1. I didn't know about this sequel for the longest time as well until someone in my ward had it on their bookshelf! This second one is really cute and also from Stargirl's perspective, which is fun to read.

  7. That's adorable! No wonder you have a soft spot for this one. It's been a while since I've given Jerry Spinelli a shot, maybe it's time, this one does sound really cute.

  8. First, a moment of silence for Borders.

Also, I love when books have special memories attached to them that go beyond what's inside the pages. I have certain books I'll never get rid of because of when/where I bought them or who I bought them with :)

    1. I think that is one advantage of physical books vs. ebooks. For the most part I am all for ebooks -- I find them easier to read and transport, and to me the story is what is most important, not the act of holding the book. But there are a few like this with special memories that ebooks just won't ever have.
