TGIF: Book Appeal

Friday, February 03, 2012

TGIF is a weekly question about books posed by GReads! Week after week I've seen it and thought, "Those questions are fun. Too bad I always have my YA feature on Fridays." This week I realized that it isn't the worst thing in the world to double-post. If you are grievously offended by double-posting, I apologize -- but I am looking forward to answering these questions instead of just reading them in the future. Hooray!

This week's question is:

Book Appeal: When you're browsing goodreads, the library, or another blogger's reviews, what grabs your attention to make you want to read it?

Honestly, many different factors can make a book pop out to me. Like everyone, pretty covers appeal to me. I also like character-driven books, so if someone says a book is really character driven -- even if they are complaining that the book is too character-driven -- I'll often want to check it out. There are also certain subjects that I love. If there is anything neuroscience-y or medical about it (especially cancer, since that is the speciality I would most love to work with), I am all over it. I also lately am really interested in the Tudors, and will pick up just about anything about them. I think I go through phases where certain books appeal to me.

  1. I think everyone has subjects that they're drawn to. Mine's the Middle East (all of it but mostly anything Israel/Palestine related) and American wars. Cheerful, right? But you're totally right about pretty covers. The more design classes I take in this publishing program the more I realize how much I unconsciously (and no, consciously) judge books by their covers.

    1. I think it would be so exciting to take cover design classes. i remember when you redid A Wrinkle in Time and it was awesome. I also love South Asian stuff -- not quite the same as Middle East, but similar.

  2. Ooh, it totally slipped my mind to mention the subjects covered in books. I totally choose my books that way sometimes!

  3. Oooh, character-driven is an interesting characteristic. And sometimes medical-related books are good, too -- they make me feel real smart. :D

I hope you'll drop by and enter my giveaway to win one of three ARCs! :)

  4. Hi Lorren! Since you are interested in cancer, I've got to give a shout out to an AMAZING book from one of my favorite YA authors. The Fault in our Stars, by John Green. I casually checked your blog and didn't see any reviews of his books on here. I know that we have had similar taste in books in the past, so I think that you would like him.

  5. That is a book that I am very much looking forward to! I am on hold for it at the library (# 11, with only 1 copy, so it may be awhile, dang it). Thanks for the added suggestion, though! I have heard great things about him and I can't wait to read the book!
