Top Ten Tuesday: At the Top of My TBR for Fall

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

First of all, can I just say that I love fall? I love when the air gets a little nippy, love the feeling of the first day of school and buying plaid skirts and notebooks, love traditional fall food (bring on the pumpkin cookies!). I really have to make the most of fall this year because it is potentially the last fall I'll be experiencing in a while. Next year we will be off to dental school, and one of the prime candidates is Midwestern University in Arizona... not going to get any nips in the air in that climate. Anyway, with that rant out of the way, there are several books I'm hoping to get through this fall. I don't know how many of them will actually be attainable, and they are certainly not all fall-themed (I just got a little excited when I typed the word "fall" into my title). Without any further soliloquizing...

1. Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis - I actually bought this right after Christmas and it has waited patiently on my nightstand ever since. I really am excited to read it, but my library holds keep coming in (sigh). However, I think I really am going to get through it in the next few months, and I can't wait to read it.
2. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins - I loved Anna and the French Kiss with a mad crazy passion, so I can't wait for this little installment. Even better that it takes place in San Francisco, my other favorite city.
3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - I am also on hold for this baby at the library and I can't wait until it's available.
4. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova - This is a book I borrowed months ago from my sister-in-law, but I am now planning on reading it in October, just in time for Halloween.
5. The Dead-Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan - Another creepy one for Halloween. My loverboy will be in Arizona interviewing at aforementioned fall-less Arizona dental school on Halloween, and I am fully intending to freak myself out while I am home alone.
6. Nevermore by Kelly Creagh - I also won this ages ago and it seems suitably creepy for Halloween. Can you tell the kick I am on here? Last year I didn't read any scary books for Halloween and I regretted it. This year I am getting fully into it.
7. Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson - Um, gear switch? I read "Self-Reliance" in high school and it rocked my world. Lately I've been thinking about it and wanting to explore my thoughts about it more, so I got a public domain ebook of the essays and am excited to delve into them again. Also, Jillian is doing a transcendentalist month, so I have incentive to finish.
8. I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak - This has been sitting on my bookshelf for far too long and the Husband is on my case to finish it. Which I will hopefully be doing soon.
9. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - This will be a reread for me, but as it has been almost 9 years since I've read it (am I really that old?) I think it's time for a revisit. I've forgotten so many details and I want to cement it better in my memory.
10. Ms. Hempel Chronicles by someone I'm too lazy to look up (sorry, talented author!) - I've had this one for a while and it will be a great back-to-school read.

As you can see, I've got my work cut out for me! Happy fall - may the temperatures drop to a delicious 55 degrees for you and I soon.

  1. I am SO ready for fall! I love fall clothing, I love the leaves, I love driving out to the cider mill for fresh cider and apples and maple syrup :) Enjoy the Historian! It's one of my all-time favorite books! October is the perfect time to read it!

  3. Really great list. I want to read most of these, except for The Dead-Tossed Waves, which I've already read and LOVED.

  5. LOVE Emerson's essays. Really, they always change my paradigm a bit. And I've read them more than once. I particularly enjoy "The Poet."

Also, I feel like I need to get on this Anna and the French Kiss bandwagon. Everyone in the world loves it.

I'm afraid I won't have time to read this fall, but I really want another Rushdie. Midnight's Children, I'm thinking. And maybe Little Women again since I live in Boston? I haven't read it here yet, but that just seems so appropriate.

  6. Oh, also, any chance your dental schools will bring you my way? Because that'd be rockin.

  8. The Ms. Hempel Chronicles looks really good. I also just recently learned what The Historian was actually about, and now I'm excited to read it.

Come check out my list for the week here.
