TTT: Top Ten [Eleven] Awww Moments

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

This week's Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the ever-fabulous The Broke and the Bookish (how in the world do they come up with so many different topics?), is on those tender moments in books. I'm a sucker for a good warm and fuzzy, so prepare for sentimentality and gushing to ensue. (Also, be aware that there might be some minor spoilers in here. Those tender moments tend to be on the more climactic side, so talking about them might give something away).

1. Lena and Alex gazing at the stars in Delirium - The beauty of this scene took my breath away. Delirium is one of my favorite "first love" stories, I think because not only was the first love tender, but forbidden and dangerous.

2. The letters exchanged between John and Abigail Adams in John Adams by David McCullough - that example of a strong and sweet marriage really reminds me to do everything I can to keep my marriage beautiful. I think I underlined most of the letters they exchanged.

3. The end of Kartography by Kamila Shamsie, when Karim calls Ra - This relationship is my favorite ever. "Say something sappy." "Maple syrup."

4. Jo and her German man whose name I cannot remember how to spell but which is pronounced like "Bear" (Little Women by Louisa May Alcott) - We'll just say "under the umbrella," the title of the chapter, to preserve those who haven't read the book. Because really, everyone has to read this book at some point.

5. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, when Jane and Mr. Rochester see each other again - I have a soft spot for this book. Both characters have to really go through the fire before they can be together - it isn't a simple matter of sorting out the drama and making sure everyone loves the right person. This just makes it more meaningful when things finally do work out.

6. Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese (avert your eyes if you haven't read this!!) - Shiva offering himself as a donor for Marion's liver transplant. That is a scene to twist your insides into a little puddle.

7. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver, when Sam says goodbye to her little sister - This is one of the only scenes in a book where I have literally sobbed. Lauren Oliver also has a knack for twisting your insides into a little puddle.

8. Many moments in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - We will have these be my 8, 9, and 10. First one: Rosa Hubermann cuddling Hans' accordion in bed.
Next: Max and Liesel writing words on the basement wall.
And finally (the one that Marks Zusak read aloud when I saw him speak): The Confessions chapter, when Liesel tells Rudy about Max.
And a bonus eleventh scene: Liesel throwing bread into the streets when the Jews marched by.

Apparently, my "awww" moments took a more heart-rending than warm and fuzzy turn. I have been accused of being a drama queen, and I guess this is the proof. Do you have any sweet or heart-rending moments that you can't stop thinking about in a book you've read?

  1. I love your list. I actually participated this time too, and apparently I also tend towards the heart-rending rather than warm and fuzzy. Oh well, minor music is better than major to me, it must be the same with books :)

  2. I will grudgingly admit that I appreciate the relationship between John and Abigail....Yes, I'd put that one on a traditional Awww List.

But as for me....I tweeked "awww" to be moments that give one pause. Here's my Top Ten "Awww" Moments. I hope you'll stop by and see what you think.
