Sunday Salon: Working at Borders

The Sunday Salon.com

This week, I worked my first two shifts as a cafe seller at Borders. I had been working in a home for developmentally disabled people, but after being hit myself and then hearing horror stories of emergency room trips from my coworkers, I decided it was time for a change. I applied to Borders thinking that I would never actually be hired, so I was ecstatic when the general manager called me two days later for an interview.

I think I'm going to like it here (insert Annie, singing gleefully).

First of all, making the drinks if FUN! I'm not a coffee drinker, so I was a little concerned about making all those different drinks correctly. It seems like everyone is very particular about their coffee - it isn't just a drink, it's a ritual. However, I didn't get any complaints and a few of the regulars told me I did a good job. They may have just been reassuring me because it was my first day, but it made me feel better anyway. I think my favorite drink to make is the ultimate mocha - chocolate flavor. If you're ever at the Provo Borders, I'll make you one. :)

Second of all, I can check books out from Borders. For two weeks. As long as they are not mass market paperbacks. Ok, seriously? You don't even have to pay me. And every pay period we get to go into the manager's office and pick out a promotional item, such as an ARC. *Happiness*

And finally, the employee discount. 33% off, plus the Borders Plus Rewards card (which, guys, is awesome. Get one). As if I'd ever need to buy books again. But really. Amazing.

I'm sure there will be stressful days and bad days - a job is a job. But I think I'm going to like it here. (Snigger, cheese).

  1. Whoo-hoo for you! That's great! I'm sure you will be a coffee expert in no time.

    Only one word of warning: beware that employee discount. Long ago when I worked at Walden's, my stack of books under the front counter (to buy on payday) often pretty much wiped out my check.

  2. Sounds great!

    I used to work at Waterstones (chain of book shops in the UK) and I got so many free ARCs/books that were only slightly damaged. Definitely the best perk of the job!

  4. Whoa! I go to the Provo Borders all of the time! I'm not a coffee drinker either, but I love Borders's hot chocolate. Maybe I'll see you there soon. (And, awesome perks!)

  5. @J.G. - Warning duly noted! I'm definitely going to have to be careful. I'm hoping being able to "check out" books will help curb my spending.

    @Sam - I'm so excited for it. May the pile on my nightstand grow higher.

    @Debnance - It is! I am only working part-time.

    @Jessica - Yay we can be Borders friends! :) If I get a Jessica ordering a cocoa trio, I'll ask if it is "the book blogger Jessica."
