South Asian Challenge

Wednesday, December 01, 2010

I have been anticipating this challenge for a few months now, and I am so excited that sign-ups are finally posted!!

S. Krishna's Books is hosting The South Asian Challenge for the second year. For this challenge, you must read a book that is either by a South Asian author or set in a South Asian country. (The countries India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and the Maldives qualify).

The challenge runs from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011. There are 6 levels:

South Asian Encounter - 1 book

South Asian Wanderer - 3 books

South Asian Explorer - 5 books

South Asian Adventurer - 7 books

South Asian Hero/Heroine - 10 books

South Asian Guru - Over 10 books (you can set your own goal)

Because I love South Asian literature and have so many books on my TBR, I am going to aim for South Asian Guru by reading 12 books. Hopefully I can get in one a month or so. My list is subject to change but here are my hopefuls:

1. Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie

2. The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie

3. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri (reread)

4. In the City by the Sea by Kamila Shamsie (reread)

5. Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda

6. Slumdog Millionaire by Vikras Swarup

7. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth

8. The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee

9. Autobiography by Ghandi

10. Born Confused by someone I currently can't remember

and I'm open for suggestions for the other ones! S. Krishna has a lovely South Asian review database so it shouldn't be hard to find more books I love.

Can't wait for this challenge! If you are interested, sign up here.

  1. I'm hoping to read 'A Suitable Boy' next year too. I really want to read it and it is supposed to be very readable, but I have to admit that its size is putting me off.

  2. Have fun! I love Indian lit too, and I've read quite a few wonderful Sri Lankan authors this year as well. :) If you're looking for a Banlageshi book for your list, I'd highly recommend A Golden Age!

  3. @ Sam - Yeah it's definitely a chunker. I'm probably going to read it soon because I may or may not be starting nursing school in May and would definitely have no time for it after that! Keep me posted on when you start it/how you like it!

@ Eva - I'll have to add that one to my list of potentials. Thanks for the recommendation!

  4. Its my first challenge ever and I am also looking forward to bloggers recommendations. You have got some good ones there.
